a copy of a letter written by Captain Rolfe, Master of the "Yuengang", to Monark. Jardine, Matheson & Co.Ltd., from which you will note that every possible caro was taken to find the opium which you suspected the "Yuensang" had concealed in har bunkers, but which your officers were unable to discover while in this Port.

We understand that you are not at all satisfied with the care taken by the atoamship owners, or by the Authorities in Hongkong, to prevent the amugɛl inɛ of opium on board the vessels in Hongkong. Aa we feel quite sure that "easra. Jardine Batheson & Co.Lti, and other steamskip owners in Hongkong will do every- thing possible to try and stop this traffic, we respectfully request that you advino us of any suggestions you may have that would tend to put a stop to the smuggling of opium on board the Hongkong/Manila stormers, as wo wish to do everyting in our power to place evory difficulty in the way of the illegal importation of this article.
